When reviewing your homeowners insurance policy, you’ll come across different coverage sections—A, B, C, and so on. Coverage C is one of the most important because it protects the personal belongings that make your house a home.
What Is Coverage C?
Coverage C: Personal Property
covers the items you own inside (and sometimes outside) your home. This protection typically applies whether the items are damaged, destroyed, or stolen due to a covered peril.
What Coverage C Typically Includes
- Furniture: Sofas, beds, tables, chairs, and more.
- Electronics: TVs, computers, tablets, gaming systems.
- Clothing & Personal Items: Everyday wear, jewelry, accessories.
- Appliances: Washers, dryers, refrigerators—if not built-in.
- Decor & Household Items: Rugs, lamps, artwork, dishes, cookware.
- Outdoor Belongings: Items like patio furniture or grills (may have sublimits).
Off‑Premises Protection
One helpful feature of Coverage C is that it often follows your belongings. For example, if your laptop is stolen from your car or your luggage is lost while traveling, Coverage C may still apply—though usually with lower limits.
Special Limits for Certain Items
Some categories have sublimits, meaning the policy only pays up to a smaller amount unless you schedule them separately. Common examples include:
- Jewelry
- Firearms
- Cash or collectibles
- Antiques or fine art
Actual Cash Value vs. Replacement Cost
Your policy may reimburse items based on Actual Cash Value (ACV), which factors in depreciation, or you may have the option to upgrade to Replacement Cost Coverage
for full replacement value. Many homeowners in the Outer Banks choose replacement cost for added protection.
